The Ultimate London Food Bucket List Before Your First Visit
One of the best parts of visiting London is experiencing the city’s food. From classic British comfort food to historic pubs, afternoon tea and bustling food markets, there are plenty of memorable dishes to add to your itinerary.
While London has an endless variety of restaurants and international cuisine, these are the classic foods and experiences I recommend for a first visit.
🐟 Fish & Chips
No London trip feels complete without enjoying traditional fish and chips. Fresh cod or haddock served with thick-cut chips, mushy peas, tartar sauce and plenty of malt vinegar is one of Britain’s most iconic meals.
Where We Ate: The Mayfair Chippy
For our fish and chips, we visited The Mayfair Chippy in Knightsbridge. This British restaurant specializes in award-winning fish and chips along with other fresh seafood dishes. Its light interior, classic chip-shop details and convenient Knightsbridge location make it a great place to enjoy a traditional British meal while sightseeing. The restaurant also offers homemade sauces and gluten-free options. This place is a must try.

You’ll find fish and chips throughout London, but enjoying them in a traditional pub or classic fish-and-chip shop makes the experience even better.
🥧 Steak & Ale Pie
British pies are legendary for a reason. A flaky pastry filled with slow-cooked beef and rich ale gravy is comfort food at its finest.
A Place to Try: The Windmill Mayfair
Although we did not have a meat and ale pie during our trip, The Windmill Mayfair is one London pub worth considering. The Windmill is known for its award-winning pies, which are made in-house with homemade suet pastry and hearty fillings. Its menu includes a steak, marrow bone and ale pie along with several other traditional British pies and pub classics.

Steak and ale pie is a great choice when you want a warm, filling meal after a long day of exploring London.
🍽️ Sunday Roast
A traditional Sunday roast usually includes roasted meat, crispy potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, seasonal vegetables and plenty of gravy.
Where We Ate: Blacklock
For our Sunday roast, we chose Blacklock, a London restaurant known for its traditional Sunday lunches. On Sundays, Blacklock changes its regular kitchen setup and roasts whole joints of meat over open coals. The roast is served with crispy potatoes, seasonal vegetables, Yorkshire pudding and rich gravy for the full British Sunday-roast experience.
Blacklock’s Sunday roasts are popular and can book up well in advance, so I recommend making a reservation before your trip.

It has been a British tradition for generations and is one of the most memorable meals to enjoy during a weekend in London. Sunday roasts are popular, so consider making a reservation if you have a particular pub or restaurant in mind.
🥩 Bangers & Mash
Simple, hearty and unmistakably British, bangers and mash pairs flavorful sausages with creamy mashed potatoes and onion gravy.
Where We Ate: Mother Mash
For bangers and mash, we ate at Mother Mash, a casual London restaurant inspired by traditional Victorian pie-and-mash shops. The menu lets you build your own meal by choosing your style of freshly prepared mashed potatoes, sausage and gravy.
It was a fun way to try a classic British comfort food while choosing the combination that sounded best to each of us. Mother Mash currently has locations near Carnaby Street and in Covent Garden.

☕ Afternoon Tea
Afternoon tea is one of London’s most iconic food experiences. Delicate finger sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream and jam, pastries and a proper pot of English tea make it feel like much more than a regular meal.
Where We Had Afternoon Tea: Fortnum & Mason
We chose Fortnum & Mason’s Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon for our London afternoon tea. Located on the fourth floor of its historic Piccadilly store, the elegant tea salon serves precisely cut finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones with preserves and clotted cream, beautiful cakes and a wide selection of Fortnum’s teas.
Afternoon tea here feels like a complete London experience rather than simply another meal. Reservations are highly recommended, especially if you have a particular date or time in mind.

London offers everything from traditional afternoon tea in historic hotels to modern themed experiences. Reservations are recommended, especially for the city’s most popular locations.
🍺 Experience a Traditional London Pub
Visiting a traditional pub is an essential part of the London experience, and The Devonshire in Soho was one of our favorite places from the entire trip.
The downstairs pub has a warm, lively atmosphere that feels unmistakably British, while the upstairs restaurant and grill room offers a more complete dining experience. The Devonshire serves classic pub food along with Scottish beef cooked over a wood-ember grill, fresh seafood and a famously well-poured pint of Guinness.
We finished our meal with the sticky toffee pudding, and it was wonderful. The warm sponge, rich toffee sauce and ice cream made it one of the most memorable desserts we had in London. If you want to enjoy a traditional London pub while also having an excellent meal, The Devonshire is well worth adding to your plans.
Restaurant reservations are released three weeks in advance and can be difficult to secure. The downstairs pub does not accept reservations and is available to walk-ins only.

🥖 Sausage Roll
Found in bakeries across London, a freshly baked sausage roll makes an easy breakfast, lunch or afternoon snack while sightseeing.
Where We Ate: The Ginger Pig at Borough Market
We tried a sausage roll from The Ginger Pig while exploring Borough Market, and it was one of the best quick bites we had in London. The Ginger Pig is a traditional British butcher known for its generously sized handmade sausage rolls, which are wrapped in flaky golden pastry and filled with seasoned British pork.
The sausage rolls are filling enough to share, especially if you plan to sample several other foods around Borough Market.

The combination of seasoned sausage and flaky pastry makes it a convenient option when you need something quick between attractions.
🍫 Chocolate and Desserts
London is filled with dessert shops offering gourmet chocolates, gelato, cookies, pastries and elaborate sweet treats.
Where We Bought Chocolates: Harrods
We visited the famous Harrods Food Halls in Knightsbridge to pick out chocolates. Harrods has an entire Chocolate Hall filled with handmade chocolates, truffles, pralines and beautifully packaged gifts from its in-house chocolatiers and luxury chocolate brands.
Even if you do not plan to purchase much, walking through the Harrods Food Halls is an experience of its own and an easy addition to a day in Knightsbridge.

Where We Had Dessert: EL&N London
We also stopped at EL&N London for dessert. Known for its colorful pink interiors and picture-perfect presentation, EL&N serves handmade cakes, pastries, specialty coffees and other indulgent treats.
It is a fun dessert stop when you want something sweet in a lively setting that feels made for photos. EL&N has several cafés throughout London, so it can be worked into many sightseeing itineraries.

🛍️ Borough Market
Borough Market is one of the best places in London to sample several foods in one stop. Located near London Bridge, this historic market is filled with bakeries, produce stands, specialty-food shops and vendors serving dishes from around the world.
We enjoyed walking through the market, looking at the different stalls and choosing what to try. This is also where we found the delicious sausage roll mentioned earlier in the blog.
Borough Market can become extremely busy around lunchtime and on weekends. I recommend arriving earlier in the day so you have more room to explore the stalls before the largest crowds arrive. Come hungry and consider sharing a few items so you can try more than one thing.
Its location also makes it easy to combine with nearby attractions such as London Bridge, Shakespeare’s Globe and a walk along the River Thames.

Take a London Food Tour
If you want to try several London favorites without researching every stop yourself, a guided food tour can be an easy addition to your itinerary.
A food tour gives you the chance to sample local dishes while learning about London’s culinary traditions and neighborhoods from a guide. It is especially helpful for first-time visitors who want to discover places they might otherwise miss.
